Cost of living

The national currency is the lev.

Its exchange rate is set at 1.95583 leva per 1 euro.

You are advised to change currency at recognized change offices or in banks.

At this practically fixed exchange rate, the cost of living in Bulgaria is really attractive for western Europeans.

A meal in a restaurant such as pub, usually costs about 6 euros per person, wine included.

For connoisseurs and gourmets, the top restaurants in big towns offer a fine Bulgarian and international cuisine, as well as seafood on the seashore. Though higher than elsewhere in the country, the bill would be nothing compared to Western Europe.

As Bulgaria develops in the viticulture, you will estimate the variety of wines offered for low prices.

In stores, a good country wine would cost about  3 to 6 euros.

In restaurants, count it 6 euros for a good bottle.

Be careful in spa centers! As they are crowded of tourists, prices trend to be much higher.

Getting a taxi is cheap too, less than 50 cents per kilometer.

But don’t take just any taxi! Cabs not identified with the name of a company will cost you much more.

Bulgaria is reputed with its quality clothing. On the markets you could find clothing of good quality for a low price, along with numerous souvenirs to be taken home from your visit to Bulgaria.
